To the Women Who Empower Me,

To the Women Who Empower Me,

You are the huggers. You are the ones I run to when I am hurting and when I am over the moon excited because you are also the best advice-givers. Even when it's unsolicited and you're telling me what I need to know when I'm not ready to hear it. You're the ones that taught me things like why I should always have my nails painted and that the use of foul language is a sign of intelligence. You are my home-in-a-person people, the people that care for me when all of my energy has been spent on caring for someone else. You are the ones who lift me up out of the blue because you believe that women need to empower other women.

I love you. I love teasing you. I love being teased by you and being made to feel like I am part of your families regardless of whether we have shared blood, or how or when we met. I love it when people compare me to you because there is no greater compliment than realizing I am to someone else what y'all have always been to me. You are truly inspiring.

I love the movie dates and lunchtime bickering. I love the inside jokes and clowning around when all of us should be getting work done. I'm perfectly content in living in the beautiful chaos of those moments because you have taught me that those are the most important moments in my life. You share them freely and encourage me to do the same with others. I may not always be listening but I hear you, and I thank you for everything from not so gentle reminders about wearing my coat when it's cold out, to making me work for the solutions to my problems instead of always giving them to me.

You are my grammar fixers and the readers of my essays before they are even good enough to be considered a rough draft. You've seen my papers when all they say is "why" and nothing else, and you've still championed me. You are the believers in my potential even when I don't believe in myself. You are the ones who set the bar high and go find a stool while I'm trying to figure out how on Earth I'll ever reach it.

You are the gif senders, the pranksters, and the keepers of my secrets. You're the "I swear if you touch my Reese's it'll be the last thing you do" sayers even though we all know that isn't true. You are the "I am woman, hear me roar" voices in my head when I'm trying to kill a spider. You are the killers of the patriarchy, the prayer warriors, and the strongest people I know. in turn, I have become a much better listener when other people come to me.

You are the gif senders, the pranksters, and the keepers of my secrets. You're the "I swear if you touch my Reese's one more time it'll be the last thing you do" sayers even though we all know that isn't true. You are the "I am woman, hear me roar" voices in my head when I'm trying to kill a spider. You are the killers of the patriarchy, the prayer warriors, and the strongest people I know.

You may have known me since before I was born, you may have been knocked to the ground by the magnitude of our first encounter, or you may have even been subjected to panic-induced crying in an elevator very early on in our relationship. No matter how, or when, or why, know that those little moments aren't taken for granted. Know that when I roll my eyes, I do it out of love. Know that I am a better person for knowing you.

You are my first calls, first texts, and first emails for just about everything. You are the smartest, kindest, and most inspiring women I could have ever asked to have in my life and then some. Our relationships are as beautifully chaotic as the space we create around us with we find axes where they shouldn't be or race wheely chairs down the hallways and I wouldn't have it any other way. You are a huge part of the reason I am who I am today because you are the ones who made me believe in the beautiful chaos that surrounds us. So today on International Women's Day, I want to thank you for empowering me to be a better student, a better disciple, a better daughter, a better friend, a better human, and a better woman.

You are the few.

You deserve the world.
